Supports are one of the most misunderstood aspects of 3D printing. Use too few and your print collapses; use too many and you waste material and spend hours removing them. This guide explains exactly when supports are needed and how to configure them for the best results.
Why Do 3D Prints Need Supports?
FDM printers deposit material layer by layer from the bottom up. Each new layer needs something to rest on. When a model has features that extend horizontally into open air — called overhangs — the printer needs temporary support structures underneath to prevent the material from drooping or failing.
The 45-Degree Rule
The most important concept in support planning is the 45-degree rule: most FDM printers can print overhangs up to 45° from vertical without supports. Beyond 45°, quality degrades rapidly and supports become necessary.
- 0–45° overhang: No supports needed
- 45–60° overhang: May print acceptably depending on your printer and settings
- 60–90° overhang (horizontal): Supports required for good results
Bridging: The Exception
Bridging is when the printer spans a gap between two supported points horizontally. Most printers can bridge gaps of 50–80mm without supports if the bridge is straight and the cooling is good. Longer bridges or curved bridges need supports.
Types of Supports in Your Slicer
Normal (Linear) Supports
The default support type. Creates a grid or linear pattern under overhangs. Easy to generate but can be difficult to remove and leaves marks on the supported surface.
Tree Supports

Support Overhang Angle
This threshold determines when supports are generated. Default is 45°. Increase to 50–55° if your printer handles overhangs well, to reduce support material.
Support Z Distance
The gap between the top of the support and the bottom of the model. A larger gap (0.2–0.3mm) makes supports easier to remove but leaves a rougher surface. A smaller gap (0.1mm) gives a smoother surface but harder removal.
Support Interface Layers
Interface layers are denser layers at the top of the support that contact the model. They improve surface quality significantly. Use 2–3 interface layers with a different material (like PVA or HIPS) for easy removal if your printer supports dual extrusion.
Support Density
Lower density (10–15%) saves material and makes removal easier. Higher density (25–40%) gives better surface quality on supported areas. Start at 15% and adjust based on results.
How to Minimize Supports Through Design
The best support is no support at all. When designing or orienting models:
- Reorient the model — Rotating a model 90° can eliminate most overhangs.
- Split the model — Print in two pieces that each print without supports, then glue together.
- Add chamfers in CAD — Replace horizontal overhangs with 45° chamfers.
- Use the model's geometry — Sometimes a slight rotation of 5–10° eliminates the need for supports entirely.
Removing Supports Cleanly
- Let the print cool completely before removing supports — warm plastic tears rather than snapping cleanly.
- Use flush cutters to clip supports close to the model, then needle-nose pliers to peel them away.
- A craft knife cleans up remaining attachment points.
- Sand the supported surface to remove any marks left behind.
