The Short Answer: Start with PLA
For beginners, PLA (Polylactic Acid) is the clear winner. It's easy to print, widely available, and comes in dozens of colors. If you're just starting out, PLA is all you need.
PLA vs ABS vs PETG: What's the Difference?
PLA — Best for Beginners
- Easiest to print — low warping, no heated bed required
- Available in 26+ colors including glow-in-the-dark and silk finishes
- Great for: toys, decorations, prototypes, school projects
- Prints at: 190–220°C
- Verdict: Start here. Always.
ABS — For Durable, Heat-Resistant Parts
- Stronger and more heat-resistant than PLA
- Requires higher temperatures and good ventilation
- More prone to warping — needs a heated bed
- Great for: functional parts, enclosures, anything that gets hot
- Prints at: 220–250°C
- Verdict: Step up to ABS once you're comfortable with PLA.
PETG — The Middle Ground
- Tougher than PLA, easier than ABS
- Low warping, slightly flexible, food-safe options available
- Great for: mechanical parts, water-resistant prints, everyday objects
- Prints at: 220–245°C
- Verdict: A great second filament after you've mastered PLA.
Which Should You Buy First?
Start with a 1kg spool of PLA in a color you love. It's forgiving, fun, and will teach you everything you need to know about 3D printing. Once you're comfortable, try PETG for tougher prints, or ABS if you need heat resistance.
